This Tiny Idiot

In my backyard,
a squirrel and I cross paths.
Two creatures, different worlds.
Both carrying something.

He’s on a mission –
tail flicking, claws clicking the bark,
fast fast fast
then freeze.

He runs that trunk
up, down, halfway, back up,
as if the world might run out,
as if the day is a loose thing he has to grab.

And here I am,
stuck in the thick part of grief,
watching this tiny idiot
treat the day like it matters.

He drags a mouthful of something,
acorn, leaf, ambition, who knows,
wedges it somewhere
like he’s building a future
with his teeth.

No speeches,
no pause to ask what any of it means.
Just motion, just work,
just the next thing.

Because life keeps moving
right there in my yard
while my brain tries to turn the heart into a rock.

In my backyard,
a squirrel and I cross paths.
Me standing there, full of it.
Him with his mouth full of tomorrow.
